Feeding Time – The Ten Commandments

Chapter 19 Mount Sinai (summary)

God tells Moses to obey Him fully and keep His covenant and Moses will be his treasured possession. The people listened to Moses and responded that they will do everything the Lord has said!

The Lord tells Moses to have the people was their clothes and be ready on the third day. The Lord will come into the sight of all the people. He told Moses to tell the people of perimeters around the mountain. They were also told to abstain from sexual relations. This is to keep them clean and focused on the Lord.

The Third day came and the Lord did exactly what he told them he would. Only Aaron was able to come up the mountain with Moses.

Chapter 20 The Ten Commandments

These are pretty self explanatory but it does not hurt to go over them again! These were set as a standard to have a relationship with God and with others!

1. You shall have no other gods before God.

2. You shall not make for yourself and idol in the form of anything! Heaven or Earth!

When I think of #1 and #2, I think of these things that have taken our focus from God. Athletes, money, possessions, sometimes even our own husbands! We are to only bow and worship to God.

3. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord!

I know for me, it goes right through me when someone uses a cuss word with God’s name. Also, my children are taught even that “Oh my God” is not good… “Oh my gosh” I can handle.

4. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

We talked about this last week refer to last Monday’s bible study.

5. Honor your father and your mother.

This is something that just sickens me when I see people not honoring their parents. I even know adults that need to work on this one!

6. You shall not murder.

7. You shall not commit adultery.

8. You shall not steal.

#6, #7, and #8 are pretty self explanatory!

9. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

Do not gossip about others, do not lie!!!!

10 You shall not covet your neighbor’s house, wife or family and possessions.

Do not envy what others have!

The people trembled with fear. They wanted Moses to speak not God. But Moses said “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.” Exodus 20:20

I will say, when these Ten Commandments were given they didn’t have Jesus in the picture who took all of our sin to give us another chance at going to Heaven. I would think that most of those in the time it was given was guilty of one or many of these! Just as we are today! The difference is that if you truly repent from any of these…you will be forgiven and given another chance! God is good!!! God knows where your heart is. I will give a complete honest testimony here. In our situation right now, I do feel myself being envy of people that can actually pay the bills! Then I feel guilt for even thinking that way. Conviction!! I also believe the Lord knows where are heart is!

Do you struggle with any of these commandments? Which one really gets to you when others do something they should not? Mine would be the Lord’s name in vain and honoring your parents.

For next week read: Leviticus 24:10-23 and Leviticus 25:47-55.

Lord God, I pray for each and every one of the people (including myself) reading this that they will be able to keep these commandments in their hearts and that they will fear you enough to keep from sinning. Thank you God for the lessons you give through your Word! In Jesus name I pray. Amen!

Many Blessings in the week ahead.

  1. You are right about the Oh my god. When we say that it makes God lowercase because we aren't really calling on Him in most instances. Unless we are about to get in a wreck or something because the time I was about to get in a fenderbender, that's exactly what I said and EXACTLY what I meant! Nice post:)

As for me, I'm currently working on the negative words and the complaining I do...I'm sure the Ten Commandments includes these in one of them ;)
